Kap Shui Mun (汲水門) was originally known as “急水門” which sounds very similar in Cantonese but means “the gate of fast that it’s a narrow navigation channel, just 180 metres wide, and is susceptible to strong currents and large waves.
Depending on the prevailing conditions, passing through this passage could be very capsizing them. Eventually, the place name was changed to the much more auspicious “Kap Shui Mun” (“the gate of drawing water”). The memorial saying “Ma Wan Kap Shui Mun” and “汲水無波” (“drawing water peacefully”), which means that the sea is calm and waveless.
