Ma Wan Island has been a key node on the Maritime Silk Road since time immemorial, to connect the Pearl River Delta with Southeast Asia, South Asia and other places for trade.
In 1868, China Customs established customs stations at Kap Shui Mun in Ma Wan, to conduct customs inspections and collect duties on merchant ships leaving Hong Kong.
We officially gave the “Ma Wan 1868” its current name in 2025. “Ma Wan 1868”, is a revitalization project for tourism initiated by the HKSAR Government.
